Estimados Socios y Amigos:

En nombre de la Mesa Directiva quiero empezar por agradecer a todos y cada uno de ustedes por el apoyo y participación durante esta temporada que culmina 2006-2007. Nos enorgullece decir que este año que dejamos atrás estuvo lleno de buenas vivencias y enormes logros.

Tanto la Mesa Directiva como el equipo administrativo y operativo del Ken estamos preparados para iniciar este año con mucho entusiasmo y energía.  Este va ser un año de grandes cambios que van a necesitar de toda nuestra dedicación.  Cada uno de nosotros se esforzará al máximo para que ustedes sigan viviendo su Ken igual o mejor que hasta ahora.  Debido a estos cambios, les pido paciencia si el inicio de la temporada no fluye como previsto.  Les invito, a darnos su opinión si hay algún área que consideran necesita mejora.  Este es su Ken, el Ken de todos.

Desde el inicio de nuestra Directiva, los objetivos de esta Mesa estaban divididos en dos fases donde los enfoques principales eran los siguientes: Dentro de la Primera Fase, mejorar la calidad del movimiento juvenil, al día de hoy me siento satisfecho con los logros obtenidos. Dentro de la Segunda Fase, obtener instalaciones propias y permanentes, gracias al generoso apoyo de muchos de ustedes se hará una realidad este año.

En esta Segunda Fase, me refiero a la alianza con el San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) que nos permitirá disfrutar, en las instalaciones de Carmel Valley, de un hogar permanente para el Ken.  Nos sentimos muy orgullosos de todos ustedes por su apoyo en este proyecto.  En resumen:

• El Ken dispondrá de espacio propio dentro del nuevo gimnasio que se está construyendo en el campus del SDJA. Este espacio estará destinado a oficinas, salas de juntas, cuartos para reuniones y espacios grandes para nuestros programas diversos. 
  
• Dispondremos de uso exclusivo de las instalaciones para nuestro movimiento juvenil todos los sábados, incluyendo salones, áreas deportivas y recreativas (exteriores y dentro del mismo gimnasio).  También tendremos acceso a espacios para nuestras actividades especiales a lo largo del año.

Como parte del proceso de transición al SDJA la Mesa Directiva del Ken decidió que las actividades de Macabi y Mini Macabi se trasladarían al SDJA en otoño, independientemente del estado de las obras.  El 8 de Septiembre darán comienzo nuestras actividades en Carmel Valley.  Estamos preparando una ceremonia inaugural especial y contamos con todos ustedes.  Confiamos que este paso será muy beneficioso para todos nosotros.

Otros objetivos y logros durante este último año fueron los siguientes:

• Mantener la calidad del movimiento juvenil.

Durante este pasado año, hemos continuado mejorando el contenido de las actividades y la preparación de los futuros Madrijim a través del programa Aluma mediante seminarios y entrenamiento individual.  Como cada año, el programa Aluma culminó con un fantástico viaje a Israel y un seminario especial de Macabi Mundial liderado por Carlos Tapiero.

Desde la llegada de Ronen, hace casi cuatro años, hemos trabajado para crear una estructura basada en edad y responsabilidades para el movimiento juvenil. Esta temporada 2007-2008 la verá finalmente implantada y confiamos en que mejore aun más la calidad del movimiento. La estructura es: Maskirut – Madrijim– Aluma – Janijim.
Mini Macabi también ha estado muy activo este año. Entre los proyectos llevados a cabo este año destacamos:

• Proyecto “Mitzvah” Mini Macabi que hizo gran hincapié en inculcar a los niños valores universales a través del estudio de las fiestas y tradiciones judías.
• Visita a un asilo de ancianos en Januca.
• Planta de árboles en Israel a nombre de los cuatro grupos para celebrar Tu Bishvat.
• Primer maratón para recaudar fondos para el St Jude Children’s Hospital.
• Participación en Broadway Omanut bailando y clausurando el programa con el Hatikva.
• Venta de limonada para recaudar dinero para Israel.

A partir de Septiembre las actividades de Mini Macabi se centralizaran a través de la directa coordinación de Mina Cohen. 
La inversión realizada en tiempo y recursos para la mejora en calidad del movimiento juvenil y en calidad y nivel de las actividades ofrecidas, han dado su fruto un año más.  La imagen del Ken ante nosotros mismos y hacia el resto de la comunidad Judía de San Diego es un reflejo de dicha calidad.

• Mantener e incrementar el número de socios para ser cada vez más fuertes como organización.

A fecha de hoy el Ken cuenta con 215 familias activas.  En los últimos dos años nos hemos acercado a las familias latino judías que llegan a San Diego dándoles la bienvenida y transmitiéndoles la importancia de pertenencia y comunidad que todos necesitamos.  Debemos todos sentirnos muy orgullosos y agradecidos de lo que hoy tenemos, nos une y llena ese espacio tan importante en nuestras vidas. Detengámonos a pensar por un momento que no existiera el KEN. Nos llevaría otros 25 años de esfuerzo, dedicación y personas para conseguir lo que tenemos hoy.  Hay mucho por hacer y muchas familias por afiliar lo cual requiere el esfuerzo y compromiso de todos y cada uno de nuestros socios. Compartamos estos pensamientos con todos aquellos familiares y amigos que hoy no pertenecen al KEN. Transmitamos que es para nosotros el KEN y hagámoslos parte integral de esta gran familia.

• Mejorar las actividades Sociales y Culturales ofrecidas.

La amplia y variada oferta de eventos y actividades ha afianzado el sentimiento de “Pertenencia” a una comunidad en todos los niveles, de pequeños a grandes.  Cabe mencionar también que estas han aportado significativamente a mantener nuestra situación financiera estable.

Nuestras principales actividades generadoras de fondos fueron los Torneos de Golf y Poker Tel Aviv Hold’em, el Camp Israel Ami (que este año contó con una semana adicional y record de asistencia con 222 niños) y el Concierto del internacionalmente aclamado grupo de música Israelí Kaveret. 

Nos sentimos especialmente orgullosos del lanzamiento del movimiento Bogrim para jóvenes adultos coordinado por Yogev Matok y liderado por una Mesa Directiva de siete jóvenes adultos.  El objetivo principal de este programa fue llenar un hueco que existía en la generación de jóvenes judíos entre 18 y 30 años de edad y ofrecer un punto de reunión para convivir, aprender, y crecer juntos como comunidad.  Desde su primer actividad Bogrim a contado con una gran aceptación entre su publico objetivo.

Algunas de las actividades ofrecidas por Bogrim han sido: noche de hipnosis, fiesta de Purim, evento con Rachell Rally, viaje de esquí y crucero a Cabo San Lucas. Además de estas actividades, Bogrim puso en marcha KBLO (Ken Business Leadership Organization), un club de negocio exclusivo que contara cada mes con ponentes de elite y cuyo objetivo es crear network, intercambiar ideas, aprender y generar oportunidades de negocio en un ambiente exclusivo al tiempo que se fomenta el espíritu de comunidad. 

Desafortunadamente, Yogev regresó este mes a Israel pero en breve contaremos con un nuevo Sheliaj que continúe el buen trabajo. Agradecemos a las familias de nuestra comunidad que apoyaron y siguen apoyando este proyecto tanto económicamente como con su tiempo y trabajo.  Sin ellos, no lo habríamos logrado.

Los siguientes son algunos de los nuevos eventos y/o programas que ya están en marcha para este año, adicionales a los ya existentes:

• Este año contaremos con una edición más de nuestros populares torneos de Poker Tel Aviv Hold’em y Golf en Marzo y Mayo respectivamente y estamos muy ilusionados con el fantástico concierto de David Broza que les tenemos preparado para Febrero. También retomaremos el tradicional viaje Marcha de la Vida del 30 de Abril al 14 de Mayo. Este año será un viaje muy especial coincidiendo con el 60ª aniversario de Israel. Para su beneficio, y para que puedan marcar en sus calendarios anuales todas nuestras actividades les hemos proporcionado junto con esta carta, un calendario de eventos desde Septiembre 2007 hasta Agosto 2008. Por favor tomen nota que algunos eventos no tienen fecha confirmada pero si sabemos el mes en el que se llevaran a cabo.

• Estamos muy entusiasmados de poder mencionar que empezando en Septiembre, lanzaremos un  nuevo proyecto de Programa de Bailes Israelíes. Estará dirigido por Sharon Neuman y contará con el apoyo de todo el comité de bailes que han trabajado impresionantemente durante los últimos años: Mauricio Margolis, Bertha Fridman, Maty Adato, y Esther Maya.  Este proyecto pretende fomentar la cultura del baile a nivel comunitario y darle una continuidad al baile Israelí a través de seminarios, entrenamientos, y presentaciones.  Inicialmente se ofrecerán una vez a la semana clases de Rikuday Am en las oficinas del Ken.

• También durante el próximo verano,  los San Diego JCC Macabi Games se llevaran a cabo en nuestra ciudad del 3 al 8 de Agosto.  El Ken ya está involucrado en la planeacion de varias áreas de este evento tan importante para la comunidad Judía de San Diego.  La participación y colaboración del Ken es de suma importancia.  Por favor comunícate a las oficinas del Ken si requieres más información o deseas apoyar este evento.

• No solo con los nuevos socios en mente, sino con todos, queremos crear un Directorio de Negocios de todos los miembros del Ken.  Nos parece una buena idea proporcionar a cada socio la oportunidad de generar negocio u obtener servicio de un amigo. Una vez finalizado será distribuido a todas las familias y pasara a formar parte del paquete de bienvenida de nuevos socios.  Les invito a enviar la información de su negocio a nuestras oficinas por email a ellen@kenjc.org o por correo ordinario.

Tristemente, este año ve partir a tres personas queridas en el Ken.  Ronen Partouche, Sheliaj, deja nuestro Ken a finales de Octubre, tras mas de tres años de fantástico trabajo, para regresar a Israel y continuar allí su carrera profesional.  Su cariño y tremenda dedicación a la tnua Macabi Tikvat Majar es incomparable. Le agradecemos su gran labor y estará siempre en nuestros corazones.  A principios de Octubre llegara a San Diego la nueva Shlija como Directora del Movimiento Juvenil.  Su nombre es Andrea Szarfman y durante un mes trabajaran juntos para asegurar que se adapte al Ken y sus programas.  Ella viene con las más altas recomendaciones de parte de Macabi en Israel.  Sus resultados de los  exámenes de la Sojnut fueron los mas altos de los futuros Shlijim de distintos movimientos juveniles y comunidades este año.

En Junio nos despedimos de nuestro socio, directivo y amigo Sammy Camhi que con su familia han hecho Aliya a Israel.  Sammy ejerció como Secretario General de esta Mesa Directiva durante  3 años y le agradecemos por su tiempo y esfuerzo para fortalecer esta institución.  Aunque físicamente no esta aquí, su trabajo se refleja en la operación cada día y pensamos mucho en el. 

Y Yogev Matok que aunque ha estado poco tiempo entre nosotros ha realizado un excelente trabajo y deja una huella profunda en todos nosotros. A los tres queremos desearles mucha suerte en sus nuevos proyectos y andaduras.  

Para concluir, quiero agradecer, sinceramente, a todas las personas que han contribuido en este ultimo año su tiempo y esfuerzo para mejorar nuestra organización.  Me siento muy orgulloso de pertenecer a un grupo con tanta dedicación, determinación y cariño hacia el Ken como el de la actual Mesa Directiva.  Estoy asombrado con todo el esfuerzo y tiempo que le han dedicado al funcionamiento de cada una de sus áreas.

Los invito a todos a seguir tan involucrados con nosotros como lo han hecho hasta el día de hoy. Nuestro éxito depende de su participación en nuestras actividades.  Esta es la responsabilidad de cada uno de nosotros.

Dear Members and Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to begin by thanking each of you for your support and participation in this ending 2006-2007 season. We proudly say that the year we live behind was filled with good moments and significant accomplishments.  

Both the Board and the Ken office team are ready to begin the New Year with enthusiasm and energy.  The New Year will bring many changes which will require our close attention. Each of us will give our utmost so each of you can benefit from your Ken even more so than in previous years.  Due to the changes ahead, I ask for your patience in the event the commencement of this new season does not flow as smoothly as envisioned.  I openly invite your opinion on any areas of perceived improvement.  This is your Ken, the Ken for all of us.

Since the beginning of our term, the objectives of this Board where divided in two phases. The main focus points where as follow: Improvement of the Youth Movement’s quality was the primary focus of Phase One.  As of today, this objective has been accomplished.  As part of Phase Two, to locate our own and permanent facilities will become a reality this year thanks to the generous support of many of you.

In Phase Two, I am referring to our alliance with the San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) which will enable us to enjoy their facilities in Carmel Valley resulting in a permanent home for the Ken.  We are very proud to have received your support in this project.  Here is a summary: 

• The Ken will have its own space within the new gymnasium being built at the SDJA campus. The gymnasium space will be used for the Ken’s offices, meeting rooms and large areas for our various programs.

• We will have exclusive use of the facilities for our youth movement every Saturday, including rooms, sports and leisure areas (indoors and outdoors). We will also have access to facilities for our special annual activities.

      As part of the transition process to the SDJA, the Ken Board of Directors decided that the Maccabi and Mini Maccabi activities should be held at the SDJA starting this fall, irrespective of the  construction status. On September 8th, we shall begin our activities at Carmel Valley. We are preparing a special inaugural ceremony and count on the attendance of all Ken members.

Other objectives and accomplishments during this last year have been:

• Maintain the Quality of the Youth Movement.

The Youth Movement will benefit from our move to the facilities at the SDJA. During this last year, we continued to improve the content of our activities and the training of our future Madrijim through the Aluma program with seminars and personal training. As with every year, the Aluma program concluded with a fantastic trip to Israel and a special Maccabi seminar led by Carlos Tapiero.

Since Ronen’s arrival, almost four years ago, we have worked to create a structure based on age and responsibility for the youth movement. This 2007-2008 season will see it implemented and we are confident it will improve the movement even more. This structure is: Maskirut – Madrijim – Aluma – Janijim.

Mini Maccabi has also been very busy this year. Among this year’s projects we emphasize:

• “Mitzvah” Mini Maccabi which focused on instilling universal values through the study of Jewish holidays and traditions.
• Visit to an elderly asylum during Hanukah.
• Tree planting in Israel on behalf of each group to celebrate Tu Bishvat.
• First marathon to raise money for the St Jude Children’s Hospital
• Participation in Broadway Omanut singing and closing the program with Hatikvah.
• Lemonade sale to raise money for Israel.

   
Starting in September the Mini Maccabi activities will be centralized through the direct coordination of Mina Cohen.

Our investment of time and resources in quality improvement of the youth group and miscellaneous activities has proven to be successful once again.  The Ken image of ourselves and the rest of the Jewish Community is a reflection of this quality.  
 

• Increase our number of memberships to become stronger as a community.

As of today, the Ken has 215 active family members. During the last two years, we have welcomed the Jewish Latin families that arrive in San Diego transmitting to them the importance of community and belonging we all need. We must all be very proud and thankful for what we have today, what unites us and fills a very important space in our lives. Let’s take a moment to consider the Ken didn’t exist. It would take us another 25 years of effort, dedication and people to achieve what we have today.  There is still much to do and a lot of families to join which requires the effort and compromise of each of our members. Let’s share these thoughts with our extended family and friends who do not belong to the Ken today. Let’s transmit to them what is the Ken for us and make them part of this large family.         

• Mejorar las actividades Sociales y Culturales que ofrecemos.

Our financial situation is stable once again thanks to the effectiveness of the cost reduction plan, a more efficient operative, and an attractive selection of events and activities. The diverse selection of events and activities offered has strengthened the feeling of “Belonging” to a community from youngsters to adults.

Our most important fundraising events have been the Golf and Poker Tel Aviv Hold’em Tournaments, Camp Israel Ami (which this year counted with an additional week and record assistance of 222 kids) and the Concert by the internationally acclaimed Israeli band Kaveret. 

We are especially proud of the launch of the Bogrim movement for young adults, coordinated by Yogev Matok, and led by a young adult Board of Directors. Since the first Bogrim activity, the movement has had great acceptance among its target group (member between the ages 18 through 30). Some of the activities offered by Bogrim have been: hypnosis night, Purim Party, Rachell Rally event, Ski Trip and Cabo San Lucas Cruise. In adition to these recreational activities, Bogrim started KBLO (Ken Business Leadership Organization), an exclusive Business Group that offers monthly gatherings with elite speakers. The objective is to network, exchange ideas, learn and generate business opportunities in an exclusive atmosphere that promotes community spirit.   

Unfortunately, Yogev must return to Israel this month, but we will soon have a well regarded Sheliaj replacement to continue the good work. We thank the families of our community that have supported and continue to support this project financially, with time and work. Without them we could have not made it possible.

The following are some new events and/or programs that will take place this year:

• This year we will organize another edition of our popular tournaments Poker Tel Aviv Hold’em and Golf in March and May respectively and we are very excited about the fantastic David Broza concert which we are preparing for February. Also from April 30th to May 14 we resume the traditional Marcha de la Vida which will be special this year due to Israel’s 60th anniversary. For your convenience, and so that you may schedule all our activities into your yearly agenda, I have enclosed a calendar of events from September 2007 to August 2008. Please note that some events do not have a confirmed date, but we do know the month in which they will happen.

• We are very excited to mention that starting in September, we will launch a new project called Israeli Dance Program. It will be directed by Sharon Newman and supported by the whole dance committee that has been working fabulously during the last years: Mauricio Margolis, Bertha Fridman, Maty Adato and Esther Maya.  This project will promote dance culture within the community, giving Israeli dance a continuity through seminars, training and shows. Initially there will be a Rikuday Am class held one a week at the Ken offices.

• Also during summer 2008 the San Diego JCC Maccabi Games will be locally held between August 3rd and 8th. The Ken is already involved in planning a few areas of this important event within the Jewish community in San Diego. The participation and collaboration of the Ken is very important. Please call our office if you would like more information and whish to support this project.

• We also want to create a Business Directory of all the Ken Members. We think it is a great idea to offer each member the opportunity to generate business or obtain a service through a friend. Once complied, it will be distributed to every family and will become a part of the Welcome Package to new members. I invite you to send the information describing your business to our office by mail or email to ellen@kenjc.org.

Sadly, three very special people have departed, or are about to depart from the Ken. Ronen Partouche, Sheliach, will leave the Ken at the end of October after 3 years of wonderful work. He returns to Israel to continue his professional career. His affection and dedication to the Tnua Maccabi Tikvat Majar has no comparison. We thank him for his great work and will always be in our heart. In the beginning of October, we will welcome the new Shijla as Director of the Youth Movement. Her name is Andrea Szarfman and during a month they will work together to ensure she adapts to the Ken and its programs. She comes to us with the highest recommendations from Maccabi in Israel. Her Sojnut exam results where the highest amongst the future Shlijim within different youth movements and communities this year.

We said farewell in June to our member, managerial and friend, Sammy Camhi, who has done Aliya to Israel with his family. Sammy was General Secretary of this Board for 3 years and we thank him for his time and effort to strengthen this institution. Even though he is not physically here, his work is reflected in our everyday work and we think much of him.

And Yogev Matok, who even after only being among us a short time, has performed excellent work and will leave a strong imprint with for those have worked with him. We wish all three of them best of luck in their new projects and adventures.  

To conclude, I sincerely thank all those people that have contributed this last year with their time and effort to the improvement of our organization. I am very proud to belong to a group with such dedication, determination and love for the Ken, as do the current Board of Directors. I am very impressed with the effort and time they have each dedicated to the proper supervision of their areas. Without all of your efforts, our accomplishments would not have been realized.

I must encourage you to continue your involvement us as you have in the past.  Our success depends on your participation in all our activities.  This is the responsibility of each and all of us.
